Speaker Spotlight: Josh Trujillo

In my PRL 215 class, I had the fantastic opportunity to listen to guest speaker Josh Trujillo speak about his career as a senior visual storyteller for none other than Starbucks! Starbucks is a crucial element in my day-to-day life, as I'm sure it is in yours! My first Starbucks drink was a double chocolate chip"venti" frappuccino when I was in middle school; from then on, Starbucks has been my best friend. I am going to extend to you all the key points I gathered from Mr.Trujillo's presentation!

Josh Trujillo is a photographer by trade. He has photographed war, the Pope and has traveled with presidents. After a successful career as a photographer, Josh took his passion and turned it into a beautiful career, sharing some of the stories of Starbucks customers and workers. In an article he wrote for Starbucks titled "Starbucks 2019: The Year in Pictures," he stated that his work with Starbucks Stories centers around the idea of documenting some of the "magic that happens over coffee."

At the beginning of his presentation Trujillo discussed trips abroad he has taken for Starbucks Stories and shared with us photographs of coffee facilities. He shared one incredibly amazing photo of a woman at a Starbucks-owned farm in Costa Rica shoveling freshly picked coffee cherries. His job has taken him all over the world, allowing him to share the stories of everyone from coffee farmers in Rwanda to consumers in the United States. His passion for his career shined through during the entire presentation, especially while he was discussing his travels and the stories he was able to share from them. He is using Starbuck's enormous consumer base and telling stories that matter.

The main goal of Starbucks Stories, it seems, is to show the Starbucks Coffee Company's global efforts to "work with military veterans, educate partners, employ opportunity youth and work with farmers and suppliers around the globe." Through Josh, there is photo and journalistic proof that Starbucks utilizes the entire globe to produce the best coffee available. They source from around the world and try to do good within every community they touch. I believe Josh is trying to display through the written word and visualize how humanitarian the Starbucks Coffee Company is while simultaneously trying to show his readers how no matter where you are, we are all connected through coffee, specifically Starbucks.

Communications is Everywhere: Elizabeth Coburn

On May 5th, I attended a virtual discussion provided by Syracuse University's Fashion Milestone. Elizabeth Coburn, the speaker, is a junior designer at the coveted fashion magazine Teen Vogue. Coburn also graduated from Syracuse University in 2019 with a major in communications design. During college, she was an active member of   University Union and served as the design director and the art director.
